Scripture Commentaries
The tongue when it is loosed and uncontrolled will burn and destroy the fairest works of peace.
The Apostle James compared an uncontrolled tongue as the same as hell: a place of torment, the accursed side of Hades.
The closest and most perfect illustration of how the tongue is set on "fire of hell" is shown in the story of the rich man and Lazarus when the rich man of the parable prayed for water to cool his tongue (Luke 16:24).
The "hot-tempered" folk will smite with the tongue, the malicious will, as a gratification of spite or as revenge for wrong, smite with the tongue.
James says men have tamed animals but have woefully failed taming their tongues, James 3: 7-8.
