Scripture Commentaries
Today as it was yesteryears and centuries, the least respected of services rendered to human hood have been those of the shepherds of God's flocks. Though least respected but are highly esteemed by God.
Many do not remember the shepherd's small, suffering, and painful beginnings but are quick to judge their latter with acrimony and blatant accusation of sacrilege.
Zechariah, a prophet in the service of God, asked the leaders of his time to pay him what they thought his services were worth.
They insulted him by offering him the price
of thirty pieces of silver, the worth of a slave.
Exd 21:32 says if an ox shall assault "a manservant or a maidservant; he shall give unto their master thirty shekels of silver, and the ox shall be stoned."
Thirty pieces of silver was also the price paid to Jesus for betraying Jesus, Matt 27:3-10.
Isaiah had earlier prophesied of Jesus saying in Isaiah 53:3– He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
There is no futility of service for the shepherds who are called and sent in His name. So also there is no futility with the obedient sheep to whom the shepherds are sent.
You may be despised of men but you are esteemed of God.
Remorse corner
Ref Matt 6:4 – ....and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
Matt 10:42– ....verily I say unto you, shall in no wise lose his reward.
Call to Word action
Matthew 6:26– Look at the birds of the air: They do not sow or reap or gather into barns--and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
The Christian clarion duty
Most who truly serve and are called of God are vilified with disparaging words from people.
Fret not because Luke says in 16:15– "....for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.
Prayer
Lord, help me to focus and serve you wholeheartedly regardless of opposition in Jesus' name.
